A UPS Technician on the west coast was called out for an emergency battery issue. He was nice enough to share some data from a Batt-Safe module that detected and prevented Thermal Runaway at a Hospital in Nevada. He was called for emergency service and upon arrival, he saw the open breaker and witnessed all of the LED’s flashing with an open breaker indicative of a thermal runaway disconnect.
From the graph below the battery cabinet temperature was over 170° F. The UPS Technician said it seemed the disconnection took place within the last half-day/several hours prior to arrival as the room was extremely warm still and the batteries were registering around 90 degrees.
He has replaced the batteries since then and there are no further issues. He shared and stressed that the Hospital was extremely thankful that the Batt-Safe prevented thermal runaway and a potential fire.
